Overview
The World YWCA is seeking qualified individual consultants or teams to lead a powerful and transformative research initiative examining the complex relationship between language, gender, power, and feminist values. Grounded in the World YWCA’s Feminist Consultation Methodology (FCM), the research will be conducted through participatory, locally led processes facilitated by young women in communities across the Asia and Pacific region.
This initiative is part of the RiseUp! Young Women’s Leadership and Advocacy Initiative, the World YWCA’s flagship programme that amplifies the voices, leadership, and rights of young women in all their diversity. The consultancy will contribute directly to advancing feminist knowledge, particularly within marginalized, colonized, and multilingual communities.
Purpose of the Research
The research aims to explore how language intersects with power structures, especially in contexts shaped by patriarchy, colonization, generational hierarchies, and social inequities. It will investigate how language can act both as a barrier to and a vehicle for feminist transformation, with a particular focus on young women’s experiences and leadership. Key themes include:
- Gendered dimensions of language (e.g., masculine/feminine articles, binary expressions)
- Colonial legacies of language, especially the dominance of English and European languages
Scope of Work and Responsibilities
Using the Feminist Consultation Methodology (FCM), the consultant/s will:
- Design a participatory research framework based on the World YWCA’s FCM
- Facilitate capacity-building sessions with young women researchers across local contexts
- Guide participants in implementing community-led research using feminist and decolonial principles
- Analyze the collective findings across countries and generations
- Produce a final report with key insights, recommendations, and case studies that illustrate the role of language in shaping or resisting power
The consultant/s must demonstrate a clear understanding of FCM and outline in the proposal how they will facilitate feminist participatory research while ensuring the safety, agency, and leadership of young women researchers involved.
Profile of the Consultant(s)
Applicants (individuals or teams) must meet the following criteria:
- Proven experience in feminist research, participatory methodologies, and working with young women
- Demonstrated understanding of decolonial frameworks, gender justice, and power analysis
- Experience in qualitative data analysis, reporting, and community-based research facilitation
- Excellent intercultural communication skills and ability to work remotely across time zones
- Experience working in or with the Asia and Pacific region is strongly preferred
Applicants from diverse backgrounds, particularly women, non-binary people, and those from historically marginalized communities, are strongly encouraged to apply.
How to Apply
Interested applicants should submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) that includes:
- A proposal outlining the applicant’s understanding of the assignment, methodology, work plan, and deliverables
- CV(s) of the individual or team members, highlighting relevant experience
- A budget proposal within the range of 40,000–50,000 AUD
- References or samples of previous work relevant to this consultancy
- Confirmation of availability to start in September 2025
Applications must be submitted by 19 September 2025.
19 September 2025.
For full consideration, all applicants are expected to carefully review the Feminist Consultation Methodology, which is central to this research. Proposals should reflect a clear, practical plan for applying this methodology to coach and support young women as community researchers.
