Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has voiced concern about the growing number of terrorist attacks in the state.

The governor reported an increase in the activities of Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram.

Zulum described the recent surge as regrettable during a Tuesday emergency security meeting in Maiduguri. The purpose of the meeting was to address the increasing attacks. “As I address this important gathering today, it is unfortunate that the renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities almost on a daily basis without confrontation signal that Borno State is losing ground,” the governor declared.

He noted the state’s past support for the military and security agencies. This help brought relative peace for years, until now. “It is disheartening to note the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko, Sabon Gari in Damboa Local Government, Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala, Izge in Gwoza Local Government areas, among other related killings of innocent civilians and security agencies. It calls for serious concern, and it is a setback in the fragile state of Borno and the North East region,” he said, listing recent incidents.

Zulum commended the security forces, President Bola Tinubu, and the Federal Government for their unwavering support in the fight against terrorism. But he called for more action. In order to swiftly halt the attacks, he advocated for improved gear and tech-based warfare.

Journalists were briefed on the meeting’s results by Prof. Usman Tar, Borno’s Commissioner of Information and Internal Security. According to him, the military promised to intensify its conflict with ISWAP and Boko Haram. To help with this endeavor, the Nigerian Air Force anticipates new equipment soon.

Tar praised the state’s relocation initiative. More than 100 villages and towns have been relocated. Abadam, Guzamala, and Marte are the three local governments that are still too risky for returns, though. As the rainy season draws closer, he also discussed plans to clear land for farming.  “Food security is the best security,” he said. The meeting asked the military to protect farmers.
