At Karu Bridge on the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi highway, a gas tanker exploded.
Numerous vehicles have reportedly been destroyed in the Wednesday night incident, which has raised concerns about numerous casualties.
The typically busy axis has also experienced extreme gridlock as a result of it.
Fatima Diamond, a witness, told Daily Trust over the phone: “The incident happened so fast.” A number of cars were burned.
“I personally counted five vehicles, but I learnt it affected over 20 vehicles. I had to quickly find my way through the help of a motorcycle.”
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency specialist, cited additional witnesses who described horrifying scenes as people frantically sought refuge.
The fire quickly spread to several cars, trapping their occupants inside.
Emergency personnel, such as firefighters and medical teams, hurried to the scene in order to help victims and put out the fire.
“I saw the tanker coming at high speed, swerving dangerously before it crashed. Within seconds, there was an explosion, and fire spread everywhere,” said a survivor who managed to escape from a nearby vehicle.
