An 18-year-old boy named Chinedu Abimbor was allegedly killed by a police officer affiliated with the Edo State Police command for refusing to stop at a checkpoint.
According to the information gathered, the incident took place in Edo State’s Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
According to sources, the victim, who was operating a Mercedes Benz, was flagged down at the town’s police checkpoint on Wednesday but refused to stop.
One of the agents apparently shot at the car because he was upset about Abimbor’s behavior, killing the driver in the process.
“His brother who was in the vehicle with him was arrested by the police and taken into custody,” a source added.
A group of young people demonstrated in the streets of Ekpoma, calling for the immediate release of his brother from detention and justice for the dead.
Speaking on behalf of the demonstrators, a young man named Lucky Adaba pointed out that local police officers frequently harass young men who drive.
He claimed that they were tear-gassed when they protested to the police to look into what might have caused the murder.
CSP Moses Yamu, the command spokesperson, stated that Betty Otimenyin, the Commissioner of Police, had mandated a thorough investigation to determine the truth of what transpired.
In a statement, Moses claimed that the CP had ordered the three patrol teams implicated in the incident to immediately cease operations.
He claims that one Chinedu Obimbor was killed in the incident, which involved a security forces joint operation team and the occupants of an unregistered Mercedes Benz.
“The Commissioner of Police has commiserated with family, friends of the deceased, and sued for calm with assurance that justice will prevailed at the end,” he said.
